Using brackets in document searching

Leading on from multiple search terms, brackets help separate your variable criteria. In other words, your ‘OR’ logic.

If entering multiple Search Terms, enter brackets around each distinct group. For the following search term:

“Customer Service” AND “IT Helpdesk” OR “IT Support”

You will need to separate your OR’s from your AND’s by using brackets. Try to think of it in terms of a maths equation. For example: 2x5 + 3x5 = Does this mean 2x5 = 10 plus 3 = 13 x 5 = 39?

To help solve this equation, use brackets: (2x5) + (3x5) = 25

Thus, our example will read:

“Customer Service” AND (“IT Helpdesk” OR “IT Support”)

You can expand your search further by using multiple brackets i.e. Searching using multiple ‘OR’ scenarios in one search term.

For the following search term:

“Customer Service” AND “IT Helpdesk” OR “IT Support” OR “Technical support” OR “IT Technical”

Using the maths equation scenario above, we need to separate our OR’s from each other and from our AND. Thus, our example will read:

“Customer Service” AND ((“IT Helpdesk” OR “IT Support”) OR (“Technical Support” OR “IT Technical”))

Results returned for this example will be as follows:

1. Customer Service and IT Helpdesk 2. Customer Service and IT Support 3. Customer Service and Technical Support

4. Customer Service and IT Technical.
